Another shot at Jack Baldwin's Shop

Another good shot of the line up with a little more of the Mustang for Larry. Also I'm really enjoying Pickle Bill's across the street. Any place with a giant pickle to lure you in must have good steaks.

Just another observation, but quite odd that the rigid Triumph behind the Mustang has a swingarm oil tank. What would you give to walk down this row of period modifieds. I'm getting the feeling Jack was one of the shops that bought your bike and resold it. Must have paid well considering the inventory.

Well, the receipt I have from when my father bought his new Vincent Black Shadow there in 1954 shows he traded in the 1953 AJS that is in the other pictures. Baldwin's gave him $600 for the AJS, applied as the down payment on the $1400 Shadow. 18 payments of $58 and the Shadow was all his. This was Oct of 1954.

Hi - not so sure about that rigid Triumph, it could be a single cylinder Ariel. That would explain the different shape oil tank. Ariels were painted pale blue by the factory for a while. The picture isn't too clear, but the carb looks slightly down-draught and the higlight on the engine, just above the Mustang pillion pad, could be the intake valve pushrod tube. Okay, I'm off to count some more rivets!
